AIR POLISHING OF TEETH
Air polishing of teeth is one of simplest and basic dental treatments. Thanks to it, a fast reinstatement for our teeth of the former whiter colour and glitter is made possible. The treatment consists in removing enamel of deposit coming from the tea, coffee, cigarettes or other colouring substances from the surface. These are the discolourations collected by months or years, the patient isn't able to remove independently using available funds for usual dental hygiene.
The frequency of conducting the treatment is conditioned by the conducted lifestyle and dental hygiene. Standard air-polishing should be applied once a year, however, depending on needs, it is possible to repeat this treatment even every 6 months. Air polishing is being recommended before the treatment of whitening teeth, as well as at individuals carrying braces or being characterized by dental crowding. In two last cases, an accurate dental hygiene is hampered, and consequently there comes to the faster accumulation of bacterial tile and deposits. One should also treat the air polishing as the supplementing treatment of scaling, that is removing the dental stone with the help of ultrasound.
The procedure of air polishing consists in cleaning the surface of enamel with the help of small powder sprayed under great pressure. Thanks to that cleaning of even most inaccessible places is becoming possible such as fissures on chewing surfaces or also interdental spaces. The air polishing is a short process (about 15 minutes) and painless procedure. Some patients can sense slight discomfort caused by irritating gums which quickly subsides. Conducted in appropriate time intervals is a completely safe treatment.
After air polishing applying varnishing is recommended (of fluoridation) with the objective of strengthening dental enamel. For 3 first hours patients should refrain from the cigarette smoking, drinking tea, coffee, wine or other colouring drinks because in this period teeth are susceptible to discolourations. After this time it is possible to return to the normal lifestyle. Patients should however remember, that if want how longest to keep the aesthetic effect must keep like the best dental hygiene.
Air polishing cannot remove permanent discolourations such as the inborn developmental disturbances of enamel, post-antibiotic discolourations or initial carious stains.
The contraindications against the air polishing are: limitation of sodium consumption, the ulceration of organs of the digestive system, dysfunction of lungs (asthma, pneumoconiosis), wounds and the pain of oral mucosa.
